Yesterday was Gerry Keating’s Wattle Park Meander 134 kms. While a little shorter than some Audax rides, it was a solid day out as we seemingly climbed all day. With 8 starters we welcomed Ryan and Teagan, new to Audax and who absolutely nailed it, finishing in a very respectable 6 and a bit hours. A great effort with vm 2500.
It was a day of contrasts starting with the weather: my Garmin showed min -2.0c max 24.0c; wide open spaces between Harrogate and Dawesley compared with Mt Barker (gosh, it’s busy now) and dry conditions (see photos) compared with the recently rain-soaked Adelaide Hills.
And then we have the drivers: some good and some not so good. I want to share with you an incident involving a driver out of Woodside. They overtook us as a car was coming in the opposite direction with no care whatsoever … forcing the oncoming car onto the shoulder. As we all gasped, thankful nothing serious happened, karma struck as a police car suddenly appeared, lights flashing as it pulled the offending driver over. You’ll be pleased to hear we resisted the urge to stop and applaud the police for their impeccable timing. Thank you Gerry for a great day out.
The next Audax ride is Shayne Husson’s Midwinter Classic (157, 202) coming up on the 21 June. To register https://audax.org.au/ride/event-register/?event_id=10975
