Vale Bob McHugh: A Stalwart of the ACT Region

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Bob McHugh, a man whose influence on the ACT Audax Region spanned over two decades.

Bob was a steadfast member and contributor who helped hold our region together. Long before “gravel” or “bikepacking” were trending terms, Bob was out on the backroads of NSW, pioneering the routes we love today. His meticulous planning and support for legendary rides—including the Star Gazers’ Guide 1,000km and the Young Binnaway Young 1,000km—provided unforgettable experiences for countless riders.

Beyond his logistical brilliance as a Ride Organiser, Committee Member, and National Calendar Co-ordinator, Bob was a gifted photographer who captured the spirit of events like the GSR. His own riding resume was equally formidable, featuring the Paris-Brest-Paris 1,200km, the Wild Atlantic Way, and the Great Southern Randonnée.

In 2025, Bob was recognised as an Outstanding Member, a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of his time, expertise, and enthusiasm to the sport. Whether he was serving as Brevet Secretary or sharing stories from his European tours, Bob’s presence was a constant source of inspiration.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy etched into the very roads and routes of the ACT region. He will be greatly missed.
