Queensland Newsletter October 3rd, 2019

If you explore Strava, you will find the heatmap. On my last ride, I encountered a wading bird version in the Boondal Wetlands.

Welcome to this edition of the newsletter. It is amazing how time flies between newsletters. This edition is breaking new ground as I compile it using only a smart phone and blueooth keyboard.

As we kick off October many of us will have received our membership renewals. Don’t forget to renew! For all of us, we are nearing the end of this riding season and will be seeing in the new season that has some staple rides winding back, a fuller calendar with more variety, some new additions to the calendar including the Sunshine State 1200.

On the weekend I rode on the redclife Peninsula and found road closures on Margate Parade beside the water. The bike path is open on the waterfront or you can follow the detour signs

The Boondall Wetlands bike path is open but it is covered in a lot of tree debris so please keep your speed down in the windy sections.

Ride Reports

Roller Coaster Ride. David Booth took rode the Roller Coaster ride recently and found the route to be a little lumpy in places. You can read his report here. For those that like the route, next season will offer a ride that covers the route through Moorina in the reverse direction with a lower gradient.

Completed Rides

The Hippy Highway, 200km BRM. Both riders completed in just under 13 hours.

Roller Coaster Ride, 103km BA. This ride has 1700m of climbing with sone tough little pinches along the way. Riders completed between 5 3/4 and 6 1/2 hours.

Low an High UAF, 200km BUAF. This ride was completed in a perfect 12 hours.

River loop 5050km BA. In typical Riverloop fashion, the entire group finished in 2 1/4 hours.

Maintenance

On one of my recent rides I encountered a pair of ladies trying to diagnose a problem with the DI2 on one of their bikes. I am pretty familiar with cable shifting but electronic shifting is something unfamiliar to many of us even for the basic steps to diagnose simple issues such as battery status or a simple reset. I did a little bit of an internet search to understand some basic diagnostics. I found a very comprehensive technical page that had been compiled by Carlton Bale. Not only did I find information on how to test the battery but also all the information a handy person needs to know about all the products including product generations, incompatibilities and software version limitations. You can read his article here http://carltonbale.com/shimano-di2-everything-you-need-to-know/

Did I succeed fully editing the newsletter on my phone? not quite. I needed to use the PC for the upcoming rides and editing the link to the DI-2 information.
