Audax Insurance (from 1 Dec 2020)

Audax as part of its membership provides 24/7 Personal Accident (including death and permanent injury, non-Medicare medical expenses, loss of income and student tutorial benefits) and Personal Liability Insurance.

Volunteers, both member and non-member have the same coverage as riders whilst volunteering on Audax events.

Members who are under 18 years of age or who are not citizens or permanent residents of Australia have coverage only whilst riding on Audax rides in Australia.

The Audax insurance broker is Tresidder Insurance Group Pty Ltd and the insurers for the program are:

  • Chubb Insurance Australia Limited for the Personal Accident policy and
  • Sports Underwriting Australia via AIG Australia Limited for Public Liability.

Audax Australia Cycling Club Incorporated does not provide advice about the insurance or whether it is appropriate for your needs, financial situation or objectives. Access to this insurance is provided to Audax members in accordance with section 48 of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth) and members do not have a contract with Chubb or Sports Underwriting and cannot cancel or vary the cover. As a member, you are not obliged to accept any of the benefits of the cover. However, if you wish to make a claim under the cover provided, you will be bound by the definitions, terms and conditions, exclusions and claims procedures set out in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Our Personal Accident Insurance covers you for injuries sustained while riding your bike. The most commonly claimed expenses are for non-Medicare medical expenses and loss of income.  
The following are key exclusions and restrictions with coverage:

Key Exclusions

  • No cover for pre-existing medical conditions and/or degenerative conditions
  • No cover for any intentional self-injury, suicide, reckless misconduct or any illegal or criminal act
  • No cover when under the influence of drugs or over the prescribed alcohol limit

Restrictions

  • Weekly income resulting from sickness is not included
  • When riding for remuneration or financial reward i.e. Uber/Deliveroo
  • It is recommended members arrange ambulance cover through a health insurer or in some states and territories, from the state ambulance authority. Insurance coverage of these costs is very limited.
  • Age limits apply to Accidental Death and Total Permanent disability
  • Registered member’s cover does not apply when not riding a bicycle, where cover applies already under Private Health Insurance, Workers Compensation, TAC and/or the like.
  • Registered Volunteers, the cover does not apply when not officially acting on behalf of Audax, where cover applies already under Private Health Insurance, Workers Compensation, TAC and/or the like.

Capital Benefits

Weekly Injury Benefit (Loss of Income)

This benefit provides supplementary income where a covered person has sustained an injury due to a cycling accident covered by the policy and is unable to work or can only work in a reduced capacity. Common examples include a member/volunteer breaking bones following a cycling accident where they are unable to work, their income will be topped up until back at work subject to the policy terms and conditions.

Benefit Amount* 85% of income to a maximum of $500 per week
* Excess period: 21 days (the time away from work before being able to make a claim)
* Benefit period: 52 weeks
* No cover available for over 75’s
* No cover under this section when riding for remuneration or financial reward i.e. Uber, Deliveroo etc.

Please Note – For claims involving Workers Compensation or Accident Compensation schemes, the benefits payable may differ.


Non-Medicare Medical Expenses

This benefit provides cover for Non-Medicare medical expenses incurred because of an injury sustained in an accident whilst cycling, or when volunteering, the ‘Medicare Gap’ is unable to be claimed due to government legislation.
Common Non-Medicare Medical Expenses include Private Hospital, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Dental (excluding dentures).

Benefit Amount* Up to $5,000 per injury
* Excess: $75 for each injury (nil excess for Volunteers or when claiming through Private Health first)
* Costs will only be reimbursed up to 52 weeks from when the injury occurred

Ambulance service can generally only be covered when an injury is sustained from a cycling accident whilst participating in organised rides where Audax is the organiser and officiator

Chauffeur Benefit

This benefit is only payable where there is a weekly injury claim. The benefit provides cover for taxi/chauffeur costs to and from the normal place of residence and work, due to partial incapacity as a result of injury to a covered person.
Medical evidence is required from a doctor or specialist to certify the covered person is unable to drive or travel on other modes of public transport.

Out of Pocket Expenses Benefit

This benefit provides cover for out of pocket expenses necessarily incurred arising from injury covered by the policy and is not insured anywhere else on the policy. Common out of pocket expenses includes Medical Aids i.e. Knee Braces and Crutches, Transport costs to and from medical appointments. Medicines.

Our Public Liability Insurance pays for costs you are liable for in the event you cause bodily injury to someone or damage their property as a result of negligence whilst riding a bicycle. This means, for example, if you are in a collision with a motor vehicle, and the owner takes action against you, you are covered, even if you were at fault.

Personal Accident Claim

  • Claims may be submitted by completing the Claim Form in the following link and emailing to A&HClaims.AU@Chubb.com
  • Complete ALL sections of the claim form. Please note: Incomplete claim forms may cause delays in processing your claim.
  • Claims should be submitted within 30 days of the incident.
  • Attach all receipts (unless retained by your health fund). Hospital claims must be accompanied by an itemised receipt. If treatment is covered by your Private Health Fund please send their rebate advice with a copy of the relevant account.
  • You will be sent a confirmation receipt and a claim number.
  • Any further costs can be submitted quoting this claim number

Public Liability Claim

  • Do not admit liability to the third party under any circumstance and lodge a Public Liability claim as soon as possible
  • Claims may be submitted by completing the Claim Form in the following link and emailing to dion@tresidders.com.au

Accidental Death Claim

Is my bike insured?

  • No. Our cover does not include cover for bikes or personal property.

Am I insured whilst riding overseas?

  • No. It is strongly recommended that appropriate travel insurance be taken out for all overseas travel.

Am I covered by the Personal Accident Insurance if I am unemployed, a full time student or a pensioner?

  • Yes you are covered under all sections of the policy excluding Loss of Income.

Can I claim on my Private Health Insurance as well as the personal accident policy?

  • You must initially claim on your Private Health Insurance and then claim on the personal accident policy for any Non-Medicare Medical expenses that exceed the limits of your Private Health Insurance

Is the Medicare Gap claimable under the Personal Accident Policy?

  • No, the Health Insurance Act (Cth) 1973 does not permit the Insurer to contribute to any charges covered by Medicare (including the Medicare Gap). This means that any charges for treatment from a Doctor, Surgeon, Anaesthetist or Surgeon’s Assistant are not covered. It also means charges for X-Ray, some MRI Scans (if Medicare registered) and Public Hospitals are not covered. In addition, there will be no refund in respect of:
    • any expenses recoverable by You from any other insurance scheme or plan providing medical or similar coverage or from any other source except for the excess of the amount recoverable from such other policies/plans.
    • any expense to which the National Health Act (Cth) 1953 or any of the regulations made thereunder apply.

Am I covered if I damage someone else’s property whilst participating in a Bicycle Riding Activity?

  • Damage to another person’s property as a result of an accident where you are found to be negligent is covered under this liability policy. For example, if you damage a third party vehicle and are found to be negligent the policy will cover the damage less the policy excess.

Am I covered if I cause bodily injury to someone else whilst participating in a Bicycle Riding Activity?

  • Injury caused to another person’s property as a result of an accident where you are found to be negligent is covered under this liability policy. For example, if a member causes another rider to fall and is found to be negligent the policy will cover the damage to the third party less the policy excess.

What do I do if I am involved in an incident?

  • Do not admit liability to the third party under any circumstance and lodge a Public liability claim as soon as possible

If a member has other insurances for accidental death & total permanent disablement can a claim be made under the Audax policies?

  • The accidental death & total permanent disablement payments are a lump sum benefit, they are generally paid in addition to any other coverage the member might have elsewhere.
