This newsletter update is for Audax Australia Members with aspirations of participating in the next Paris Brest Paris 1,200km ride to be held in August 2023.

It's close enough to 365 days till the Grande Depart but don't let that fool you into complacency. There is stuff to do.

In this update we'll give information on the following:

  • Ride Information
  • Pre-registration
  • Accommodation and Support
  • What should I be doing now?

We will bring you further updates as more information becomes available.
If you have questions or would like to share your PBP journey experiences with others please contact the sub committee pbp@audax.org.au

Ride Information

So far, there have been no updates to the official ACP Paris Brest Paris website https://www.paris-brest-paris.org/en/

This may be updated in the next few weeks.

What we know now:

  • The ride will be conducted from 19th to 24th August 2023
  • The start will be from Rambouillet as for 2019

Those who “pre-register” get the opportunity to secure a place for PBP earlier than the rest. Pre-registration depends on the longest BRM ride you have completed in the previous Audax year between November 2021 and October 2022.

In 2019 after June, registrations opened on a rolling basis depending on the longest Audax ride you had completed in the previous Audax year.

Riders who had completed a 1,200km or more ride were given priority entry.

600km riders were able to enter some weeks later and so on for 400km, 300km and 200km rides.

Towards the registration cut off there were many nervous Aussie riders who had only completed a 300km ride or less and feared they would miss out on a place as the numbers filled up.

Pre-registration opens some time in January 2023 and riders completing a 1200km or longer LRM are give first opportunity to pre-register, followed a couple of weeks later by those completing a 1000km and so on down to a 200km ride.

Riders pay a pre-registration fee which is deducted from your entry fee when converted to a final registration before June 2023..
To even enter for the 2023 event every Randonneur must have completed, from 1 November 2022 to 30 June 2023, the series of 4 Brevets de Randonneurs Mondiaux from 200 km to 600 km.

If you have not pre-registered, then you can only start your registration from some time in June, 2023. You will then be among all the other people that haven’t pre-registered.

Rider Numbers

The number of places for riders at PBP expands at each event. 2023 is set to be the largest ever.

The maximum total number of participants will be announced early in 2023 although it has been hinted at 8,000 with 2,500 of those places reserved for French riders

It really is important to follow the advice to pre-register as soon as possible.

Previous PBP year rider participant numbers have been:

  • YEAR No.
  • 1931 53
  • 1948 205
  • 1951 488
  • 1956 210

Accommodation and Support

Previously Audax Australia members could make use of the services of Travel Hauss  for their hotel accommodation and drop bag services. Unfortunately, Travel Hauss have advised they will not be supporting PBP 2023.

Rambouillet has a reasonable amount of accommodation but generally this gets booked up early prior to the event.

Other accommodation is available at the much larger centre of St Quentin en Yveline.

Audax Australia will be investigating other "group options" for it's participating members.

What Should I Be Doing Now?

The important thing now is to get a long BRM or LRM ride done before 31 October 2022. The longer the better.

The "comfort level" in terms of getting a place on PBP will reduce if you "only" have a 300km done this season.
Having a 400km done would better and would introduce new riders to the ultra long distance of Audax.

To even enter for the 2023 event every Randonneur must have completed, from 1 November 2022 to 30 June 2023, the series of 4 Brevets de Randonneurs Mondiaux from 200 km to 600 km.
