Irene Plowman 1000
5 × 200 km rides within a single season
Who was Irene Plowman?
Irene Plowman (nee Pyle) rode from Sydney to Melbourne in 1937 setting a new record time for female riders. Irene rode her fixed wheel bike "Ironside" and her diet consisted of honey sandwiches and raw eggs (which she cracked on her handlebars), washed down with bidons of fresh milk. After the record, Irene gave Ironside to her niece and concentrated on her millinery business, which she ran for many decades in Melbourne. Irene died in September 1999.
